Size Chart: How to Measure a Dog for Clothing

Please be aware this is only a suggested size guide. At Lovepawz we have a size guide listed for every product.

We've gotten some great feedback from our customers on our pet clothing and accessories. They love it. However, they've also told us that figuring out how to measure a dog for clothing can be confusing. Despite providing a picture diagram, some customers haven't gotten their dog's size right. Heck, even we at Lovepawz have bought the wrong size dog coats because manufacturer instructions were so confusing.

So to help you have an easier time choosing dog clothing and accessories, we've created a new guide. Not only does it provide measurements as they relate to size clothing, but also we've included suggested breeds that would wear the corresponding size.

SIZE CHARTS BASED ON MEASUREMENTS

Following are the suggested measurements and corresponding sizes. You would measure your dog from the based on their neck--or about wear their collar sits--to the base of their tail. These measurements do not take girth into consideration. That is the measurement around your dog's belly. If you have thicker dog or one that has a broader chest, or if you dog's back length straddles two sizes, I would recommend going with the larger size. Please note that on Lovepawz we have a size chart attached to every product.

One last thought: even though we carry clothing in size extra small, in truth very few breeds wear XS. Even a Chihuahua might fit better into a small rather than an extra small, thus confirming my advice to size up.

Size

Measurement

Extra Small (XS)

6-9 inches/15-23 Cm

Small (S)

8-12 inches/20-30 Cm

Medium (M)

14-18 inches/35-45 Cm

Large (L)

20-24 inches/50-60 Cm

Extra Large (XL)

22-26 inches/55-66 Cm

Extra-Extra Large (XXL or 2XL)

26+ inches/66+ Cm

DOG SIZE CHART BASED ON BREED

These are just suggested sizes based on breed. Only you know if your dog is bigger or smaller, skinnier or pudgier than the typical breed. Also, females in certain breeds, such as French Bulldogs, tend to be significantly smaller than the males. Please take that into consideration when choosing your sizes.

Another thing to consider: what if you have a mixed breed like a cockapoo or labradoodle? Or a good old mutt like my hound mixes? Then you've got to go on both these measurements and eyeballing how your breed matches up with the list below. And when it doubt, size up. Even I was surprised that my 30-pound dog Sadie--I call her my little black dog--isn't so little after all. She wears a size large.
